WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AT TGS?

OUR
VALUES

Located in South Ribble, The Grappling Society is a modern jiu-jitsu academy offering expert coaching, a tight-knit team environment, and a training culture built on effort, honesty, and progression.

COLLABORATIVE
COACHING

Our classes follow a structured syllabus built around student feedback and long-term development—not just whatever the coach feels like teaching that week. We’re here to help you discover a game that works for you, not become carbon copies of each other.

TEAM OVER
TRADITION

Respect is at the heart of what we do—but we don’t believe you need outdated rituals to show it. We’ll never ask you to wear a certain gi, bow to a photo, or call anyone “professor.” We keep it relaxed, inclusive, and focused on what actually matters: helping each other improve.

A CLEAN, SAFE &
INCLUSIVE SPACE

We know starting something new—especially a combat sport—can feel intimidating. That’s why we work hard to make the process as smooth and welcoming as possible. Our gym is open to all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels, and we pride ourselves on keeping the environment clean, safe, and supportive.

WHAT DOES TGS OFFER?

OUR
CLASSES

Train to develop real skill, get fitter, and feel more capable—on and off the mats. Whether you want to compete at the highest level or just need a space to unwind and challenge yourself, we’ve got you.

8 WEEK BEGINNERS COURSE

Want to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but think you'd prefer a more structured start?

Our 8-week course was designed with you in mind.

Running three times a year, it includes two 60-minute sessions per week—one Gi, one No-Gi—where you'll train alongside other beginners. The course follows a carefully built syllabus exposing you to the foundational components of the sport  all aimed at helping you feel confident and capable in your core skills.

And yes, it includes live training—we don’t believe in bubble-wrapping beginners. We want you to get stuck in early so you can start building the habits, reactions, and confidence needed to actually enjoy the sport long-term and transition smoothly into our regular classes—without feeling lost or left behind.

WHO'S RUNNING THIS THING ANYWAY?

OUR
TEAM

The Grappling Society was founded by two best mates from Chorley—lifelong athletes who swapped rugby boots for gis and never quite grew out of chasing tough challenges.

After nearly a decade on the mats, they earned their black belts under Neil Atkins at the Alleycat Academy. Now, they’re putting everything they’ve learned—the good, the gritty, and the game-changing—into building their own gym. A place where anyone can show up, put in the work, and become a better version of themselves.

One of them tells bad jokes. One of them scowls a lot. You’ll figure out who’s who.

MEET HARDY

A lifelong sportsman, Hardy found jiu-jitsu after moving home from university, looking for something to fill the post-rugby void—and clearly took to it.

Nearly a decade in, he’s built a serious competition résumé across all belt levels, with podium finishes in everything from local tournaments to international Gi and No-Gi comps. He’s stepped onto the mats for submission-only shows like Grapplefest and brings that same intensity to the gym—even if he does try to hide it behind a grumpy stare.

But more important than any accolades, Hardy loves to coach—and he’s bloody good at it too. If you’re looking for someone to dive deep into the nitty-gritty of learning theory and coaching approaches, he’s your guy. He even hosts the North-South podcast, dedicated to the topic, so if you can’t get enough of hearing his dulcet tones in class, you know where to get your fix!

MEET JOSH

Josh, ever the competitor, started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with one simple mission: not to let Hardy get too far ahead. And while we all joke about him being allergic to gold medals, winning silver at every comp he entered for what seemed like an eternity, his competition resume speaks for itself—with podium finishes at major comps like IBJJF opens, the AJP Tours, and it’s Grand Slam.

Beyond physical performance, Josh is also passionate about the mental side of competition. Having worked through his own nerves and mental blocks with a sports psychologist, he loves helping others develop the mindset to succeed under pressure. His goal? To make sure every student feels prepared, confident, and ready to tackle any challenge on the mats.

But above all, it’s Josh’s passion for people and building a team that truly sets him apart. He’s obsessed with building the TGS legacy and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Whether you’re here for fitness, competition, or simply to become a better version of yourself, Josh’s enthusiasm is infectious.
